About Humboldt Bay

As California's second-largest natural bay, Humboldt Bay is an estuarine wonderland dominated by expansive tidal mudflats, eelgrass beds, and salt marshes. Traditional surfing and rocky tide pooling do not occur inside the bay, but the protected waters are a premier destination for shell fishing, yielding abundant harvests of gaper clams, butter clams, littlenecks, and Dungeness crab, alongside local oyster farming. Monitoring tide predictions is the single most vital factor for experiencing Humboldt Bay: low tides pull the water back to expose the vast mudflats required for clam digging, while incoming flood tides provide the necessary water depth for launching kayaks and setting crab pots.
