About Mendocino

Perched on headlands above the Pacific, Mendocino is surrounded by dramatic sea caves, arches, and sheltered coves like Caspar Beach. Caspar Beach offers a protected creek-mouth setting that is one of the region's favorite surfing and kayaking spots, while the rocky bluffs around Mendocino Headlands State Park feature deep, hidden tide pools and sea caves. While sand clamming is minimal along these cliff-lined shores, abalone diving (when permitted) and rock fishing are popular. Knowing the tides is vital for safety; low tide is required to explore the sea caves and intertidal zones beneath the cliffs, and high tides bring crashing waves that make the narrow headland beaches hazardous.
