Slaughter Beach tides
Predicted from Mispillion River entrance, NOAA station 8556198, 3 miles away. Delaware Bay funnels, so the tide grows as it goes: about four feet at Lewes, six by the middle bay, more again up the river. It matters here beyond the swimming. The horseshoe crabs spawn on the high tides around the new and full moons of May and June, and the shorebirds arrive to meet them. Heights in feet above MLLW. Also covers Mispillion Harbor, the DuPont Nature Center and the horseshoe crab sanctuary.

About Slaughter Beach
A recognized ecological sanctuary along the bay, this peaceful town encompasses Mispillion Harbor, the DuPont Nature Center, and serves as an official horseshoe crab sanctuary. Typical activities involve quiet family walks, incredible official sanctuary birdwatching, and beachcombing for intact whelks and shed horseshoe crab shells. The tides drive the entire ecological spectacle of this beach; high tides during the spring full moons bring thousands of spawning horseshoe crabs onto the sand, while the subsequent low tides expose rich mudflats that attract massive flocks of migratory shorebirds to feed on their eggs.
