About Smith Island

Accessible only by boat, this historic island archipelago encompasses the communities of Ewell, Rhodes Point, Tylerton, and the Martin National Wildlife Refuge. Visitors step back in time here, exploring narrow island roads, observing the local crabbing fleets, birdwatching in the refuge, and enjoying quiet shoreline walks. The daily rhythm of this island is entirely dictated by the tides of the Chesapeake Bay; checking the tide chart is vital for accessing the Martin Refuge by kayak, as high tide provides the necessary draft to glide through the shallow tidal guts to observe nesting pelicans and wading herons.
