About Cannon Beach
Renowned for Haystack Rock and sweeping sandy shores, Cannon Beach offers iconic coastal scenery with surf breaks suited for intermediate to advanced surfers near the main monolith. At low tide, the marine garden around the base of Haystack Rock transforms into a world-class tide pooling destination filled with sea stars, giant green anemones, and tufted puffins above. Knowing the exact low tide timing is essential here to walk right up to the tide pools safely without getting cut off by returning waves.
Hug Point features dramatic sandstone cliffs, sea caves, seasonal waterfalls, and tide pools nestled along small, sheltered coves. Surfing is less common here due to rocky outcrops, but the exposed rock shelves at low tide reveal vibrant tide pools. Understanding the tides is vital at Hug Point: the historical stagecoach trail carved into the headland and the northern sea caves are only accessible during low tide, and an incoming tide can quickly trap unwary beachgoers against the cliff face.
