About Anacortes
Positioned on Fidalgo Island as the gateway to the San Juans, Anacortes features scenic coastal parks like Washington Park, Sunset Beach, and the tide-swept waters of Guemes Channel. Surfing is not viable due to sheltered inland waters, but the rocky, forest-lined shores of Washington Park offer excellent tide pooling where visitors can discover green anemones, sea stars, and hermit crabs along the exposed rock shelves. Surrounding beaches and coves also provide great seasonal crabbing and clamming options. Tracking tide charts is crucial for anyone exploring the coast here, as the rushing tidal currents through Guemes Channel can be intense, and low tide is mandatory to reach the best tide pooling ledges around Washington Park's loop trail.
