About Hilo

Hilo anchors the lush windward coast, featuring dynamic ocean sites including Honoliʻi Beach Park, Richardson Ocean Park, Hilo Bay, Coconut Island (Moku Ola), and Isaac Hale Beach Park (Pohoiki). Honoliʻi is the Big Island’s premier river-mouth surf break, while Richardson offers black sand snorkeling among spring-fed tide pools. Pohoiki features new black sand beaches formed by recent lava flows. Tracking tide predictions is critical: at Honoliʻi, tide shifts alter river-mouth currents and wave shape, while low tides at Richardson expose shallow lava basins full of sea urchins and tropical fish.
