About Punaluʻu

Located on the Kaʻū district coastline, Punaluʻu encompasses the famous Punaluʻu Black Sand Beach, Nāʻalehu, Whittington Beach Park, and the southern wild shores. Punaluʻu is renowned for its striking black volcanic sand and abundant Hawaiian green sea turtles feeding on coastal algae. While heavy ocean currents demand caution, coastal freshwater springs mix with the ocean for unique swimming and light shore-fishing opportunities. Monitoring tide charts is essential: high tides submerge the narrow black sand strand and create heavy shoreline surge, while low tides expose coastal lava shelves and freshwater tide springs.
