About Copalis Beach
Stretching across the mouth of the Copalis River, Copalis Beach and nearby Griffiths-Priday State Park encompass a tranquil coastal landscape of sand dunes, river spits, and oceanfront flats. Copalis Beach is famous as one of the state's top razor clamming hotspots, as well as the world's only designated airport runway on an ocean beach. Surfing takes place along the exposed sandbars near the river mouth, while the marshy estuaries of Griffiths-Priday offer quiet beachcombing rather than rocky tide pooling. Checking the tide tables is mandatory here, both for timing razor clam digs during negative low tides and for pilot safety, as aircraft landing on the wet sand runway require a receded tide to secure a wide, hard-packed landing strip.
