About Gig Harbor
Nestled in the southern Puget Sound, Gig Harbor is supported by scenic state parks including Kopachuck State Park and nearby Penrose Point State Park on the Key Peninsula. Surfing is absent in these sheltered passages, but the warm, shallow waters make the area an exceptional destination for shell fishing and tide pooling. Kopachuck and Penrose Point feature expansive intertidal gravel and mudflats abundant with Manila clams, butter clams, and oysters, along with crabs and sea stars. Monitoring tide tables is mandatory, as low ebb tides are necessary to expose the vast shellfish beds for harvesting and to allow safe exploration of the wooded beach shorelines.
