About Shelter Cove
Tucked along the remote Lost Coast, Shelter Cove features black-sand beaches, rugged reefs, and dramatic coastal mountains. Ocean surfing is a major attraction at spots like Dead Tree Point and the main cove, where heavy point and reef breaks challenge experienced surfers. The exposed rocky shelves and tide benches around the cove host vibrant intertidal communities filled with sea anemones, mussels, and crabs. Tracking tide tables is strictly mandatory in Shelter Cove; many of the surrounding Lost Coast beaches are completely impassable at high tide, making low-tide timing essential for safe beach walking, tide pool exploration, and avoiding dangerous sneaker waves against the cliffs.
