About Bahía de Caráquez
Situated where the massive Río Chone estuary empties into the Pacific, Bahía de Caráquez and its surrounding waters—including San Vicente and the mangrove sanctuary of Isla Corazón—are dictated entirely by tidal currents. Mid-to-high tides fill the estuarine channels, creating smooth conditions for stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and boat tours through the dense mangrove roots of Isla Corazón to view roosting frigatebirds and blue-footed boobies. Conversely, low tide drains the bay, uncovering sprawling sandbars, intertidal mudflats, and exposed mangrove roots ideal for observing fiddler crabs and wading shorebirds. Local artisanal gatherers monitor the tide charts closely, using the lowest water levels of the month to harvest bivalves and crabs along the mangrove margins. Knowing the tide times is essential for safe navigation through the estuary's shifting sandbars and for timing water sports against strong tidal currents.
