About Canoa
Stretching along a massive golden sand strip backed by dramatic cliffs, Canoa and its surrounding reaches—including Playa Canoa, San Vicente, and the lush river mouth at Río Muchacho—offer a diverse coastal playground. At mid-to-high tide, powerful, consistent beach breaks draw surfers from all over, while low tide pushes the ocean back to reveal vast, hard-packed sand corridors ideal for long beach walks, beachcombing for washed-up shells, collecting driftwood, and horseback riding along the surf line. Near the Río Muchacho estuary, extreme low tides drain shallow mudflats where local foraging takes place and bird watchers spot migratory waterfowl. Tracking the tide cycle is crucial here: mid-to-high tide optimizes wave shape and push for surfers, whereas spring low tides maximize the walking footprint and expose rich intertidal flats near the river mouth.
