About Puerto Ayora

Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island is the main travel hub of the archipelago, offering access to famous sites like the white sand expanse of Tortuga Bay (Playa Brava and Playa Mansa), the calm waters of Playa de los Alemanes, and the clear volcanic canyon of Las Grietas. Surfers hit the heavy beach breaks of Tortuga Bay’s Playa Brava during mid-to-high tide, while kayakers and swimmers head to the sheltered mangrove lagoon of Playa Mansa where water levels remain calm. At low tide, the intertidal trail between Playa Brava and Playa Mansa exposes rocky lava shelves where marine iguanas gather and tide pools form. Visiting Las Grietas is also tide-dependent, as incoming high tides mix cool ocean water into the volcanic fissure, altering water clarity and temperature for snorkelers. Checking tide tables helps visitors time the long walk to Tortuga Bay for ideal swimming conditions and catch peak water clarity in the island’s brackish inlets.
