About Salinas
Occupying the westernmost point of mainland Ecuador, the Salinas peninsula presents contrasting marine environments, from the calm, high-rise lined waters of Chipipe and San Lorenzo to the wild, wave-battered headlands of La Chocolatera and Playa Punta Carnero. Chipipe and San Lorenzo are family-friendly havens ideal for swimming, jet-skiing, and paddleboarding at mid-to-high tide. On the exposed southern side, Punta Carnero delivers heavy surf breaks for advanced surfers, while La Chocolatera offers dramatic ocean views of crashing waves. At low tide, exposed rock reefs along Punta Carnero and the base of the peninsula reveal tide pools and provide shore anglers with casting platforms. Understanding the tide cycle allows visitors to choose the right beach for their activity—heading to calm bays during high tide or exploring tide pools and surf breaks when conditions line up.
